Domantas Sabonis is enjoying life as a starter for the Sacramento Kings. The Gonzaga product is one of the key reasons why the Kings are lighting the beam more frequently this season despite having a playstyle that doesn’t immediately grab one’s attention.
His playing is helping the Kings inch closer to securing their playoff spot as well as a possible MVP award. While he’s not the heavy favorite to win it, the fact that he even got involved in the conversation should make people giddy about it.
While it’s still up in the air whether the Kings can actually make the NBA Finals, Sabonis is more than happy to just be along for the ride at the moment.
Domantas Sabonis is excited about the possibility of becoming league MVP
The Spun’s Chris Rosvoglou talked to Sabonis about his chances of winning the MVP, specifically asking him what he would tell his younger self about the possible individual honor.
Understandably, Sabonis was more than happy with the recognition he was getting and assumed what his younger self would say:
“That’s awesome, that’s why we play the game. That’s why we do all that hard work during the season and offseason. To be on a contender in the NBA, you can’t ask for more. I’m just trying to accomplish the ultimate goal of winning a championship. That’s what you dream about as a kid.”
Domantas is having a solid season with the Kings, notching an impressive stat line of 20.1 PPG, 13.7 RPG, and 8.3 APG on 61% shooting and 41% from three. While his numbers don’t get talked about often in NBA media, it’s safe to say that he’s a big pillar behind the Kings’ regular-season successes.
Sabonis thinks the Sacramento Kings have a chance to get a high seed as long as they take every game seriously
The Kings are currently sixth in the West with a 39-28 record. With the regular season quickly reaching its end, Sabonis calls for his team to take every game seriously:
“Every game is basically a playoff game. The standings are crowded right now. If you go on a run, you can crack the top-three. We need to stay focused, take care of business against teams we should beat, and step up against the really good ones.”
With Sabonis focused on the big goal, it’s reasonable to expect the Kings to make another deep run in the playoffs.
