The Toronto Raptors and NBA got the sucker punch of the year when Jontay Porter, one of their players, was accused of being involved in a betting scandal. While the player isn’t a huge factor in the Raptors’ rotation, the allegations still rocked the league as athletes are prohibited from gambling.
While the league is likely going to slam the role player with a ban from the league, Adam Silver and the NBA are still going through the facts surrounding the case. A recent report reveals that the player may be in deeper trouble as the figures surrounding his betting controversy is made public.
Toronto Raptors’ Jontay Porter invested millions of dollars in betting in the past two years
Matt Hladik of The Spun reported that Porter used a popular sports betting service to open an account and gambled on games before the Raptors picked him up:
Porter allegedly owned and operated a FanDuel VIP account out of Colorado where he placed “over 1,000” wagers between 2021 and 2023, Action Network’s Chase Howell said. Right now, there is no evidence any of the reported wagers were NBA-related.
The betting occurred while Porter played for multiple G League teams and ceased right before he signed a two-way contract with the Toronto Raptors in December 2023.
“He was firing all of the time,” a source told Howell.
The amount of bets Jontay Porter placed while he was still making rounds in the G League would have easily gotten him millions of dollars if he bet on games he was involved in. His actions greatly affect the league’s integrity among fans and investors.
If he was proven to have placed money on NBA games, he can be assured that a lifetime ban from the league is all but guaranteed. Compromising your integrity as a basketball athlete for a few extra dollars is something the league will consistently stand against.
