At the moment, Toronto Raptors forward Jontay Porter remains suspended indefinitely. This is after the 24-year-old saw his name dragged into some serious allegations surrounding sports betting.
The NBA has launched a full-blown investigation on Porter and multiple instances of betting irregularities centered around the 6-foot-11 power forward. As it turns out, Porter’s exclusion from the league could be converted to one of a more permanent nature.
Toronto Raptors News: Adam Silver Speaks Out on Jontay Porter’s Betting Scandal
NBA commissioner Adam Silver recently opened up about Porter’s current case as the top-ranking league executive revealed his brutally honest perspective on the matter. According to Silver, he considers this a “capital sin,” which if Porter is proven guilty, will lead to the player’s permanent ban from the NBA:
“I have an enormous range of discipline available to me,” Silver said, via Tim Bontemps of ESPN. “But it’s a cardinal sin, what he’s accused of in the NBA, and the ultimate, extreme option I have is to ban him from the game.
“That’s the level of authority I have here. Because there’s nothing more serious, I think, around this league when it comes to gambling: betting on our games. And that is a direct player involvement. And so, the investigation is ongoing, but the consequences could be very severe.”
This does not come as a surprise at all. Porter is being accused of some nasty allegations, which have put the NBA in a bad light. As they always say, however, the accused should remain innocent until proven guilty.
Adam Silver Sends Stern Warning
Silver is definitely making a statement here. He is intent on using this case as an example and a precedent of what players can expect if they even think about getting themselves involved in sports betting. The commissioner has also sent a stern warning to betting entities about how they must conduct themselves amid the rise of this very lucrative industry in the nation:
“At the end of the day, there’s nothing more important than the integrity of the competition,” Silver said. “And so, any issue raised around that is of great concern to me and to all commissioners, to all people who are safeguards, who are all people who are in a position and have a responsibility to safeguard the game. Again, this is a burgeoning industry in the United States. It’s been legal in other places in the world for decades. There’s lessons to be learned from the way that sports betting is monitored and regulated in other jurisdictions.
“And again, I think as these unfortunate examples come along, we may have to adjust our rules and our partner gaming companies and those companies that aren’t our partners may have to adjust their behavior as well.”
