Gilbert Arenas isn’t exactly the most popular figure among Boston Celtics fans. Well, the former three-time All-Star may have just secured his place on the hate list of every single Boston supporter out there after Arenas recently came out with a brutally honest tirade that aims to discredit the Celtics’ legacy and their NBA record 17 championships.
Apparently, Arenas doesn’t believe that the majority of Boston’s titles count.
Gilbert Arenas Goes Scorched Earth on Boston Celtics
Speaking on a recent episode of his podcast, the former Washington Wizards superstar decided to respond to Celtics icon Paul Pierce‘s claim that Boston will raise banner No. 18 before the Los Angeles Lakers do. According to Arenas, most of the Celtics’ championships came when the competition was not as tough as it has been over the past few decades:
“Lakers fans just caught up to a group whose whole legacy of championships was built with eight teams,” said Arenas (h/t Shane Garry Acedera of Basketball Network). ” And I’m just being honest… 95% of the championships were created before Paul Pierce was even born. That’s one. Two, I don’t know if anybody’s alive to remember when they won championships back in those 50s days.”
Arenas wasn’t done either. The controversial All-NBA guard then went on to point out that the only thing the Celtics can be proud of in the last three decades is their one championship in 2008.
“Those AAU championships were really less than the Mickey Mouse one,” added Arenas. “In the last 30 years, Boston has been irrelevant in basketball history. Your history was built at the beginning of time because you guys had all the great players. In the last 30 years, where has Boston been? You got one chip, one championship in the last 30 years.”
Gilbert Arenas says the Celtics have been irrelevant for the last 30 years and most of their championships came in an eight-team league
