While the Boston Celtics have their targets set on winning the title this season, the front office has also kept a keen eye on what the future of this franchise will look like in the years to come.
Jrue Holiday has been an integral part of Boston’s success this season since his summer blockbuster trade, and it is clear that the Celtics want to keep him for the long haul. So much so, that they’ve now agreed to reward the two-time All-Star with a massive contract extension to lock him up for the considerable future.
Boston Celtics News: Jrue Holiday Agrees Four-Year, $135 Million Extension
ESPN’s NBA guru Adrian Wojnarowski broke the news on Twitter on Wednesday evening. According to the renowned league insider, Holiday is set to sign a $135 million extension with Boston:
“BREAKING: After arriving in a blockbuster offseason trade, Boston Celtics guard Jrue Holiday has agreed on a four-year, $135 million contract extension, his agent Jason Glushon of @GlushonSM tells ESPN,” Woj reported.
Woj also reports that Holiday has decided to decline his player option for next season amounting to $37.3 million. The 33-year-old is taking a considerable hit in his pay for 2024-25, with his salary for next season reportedly reduced to $30 million (h/t Bobby Marks of ESPN).
According to Woj, Holiday’s decision to take less money will “save the Celtics several million on the cap next year and aids in keeping together a talented and expensive core.”
This should be considered a win-win for both parties, with Holiday potentially securing the last big-money deal of his career. He will be 37 by the time this new contract expires.
The Celtics, on the other hand, will get more cap flexibility in the summer while also locking up one of the most important players on their roster.
BIG win for Boston.
