Ben Simmons has played just 15 games this season for the Brooklyn Nets. As it turns out, that’s going to be all she wrote for the former Rookie of the Year in 2023-24 after he suffered a season-ending back injury.
On Thursday, the Nets made a major announcement that will have a significant impact on Simmons’ future with the squad.
Brooklyn Nets Star Ben Simmons Undergoes Surgery Again
The Nets published a press release on Thursday via their official Twitter account. Apparently, Simmons has now gone under the knife again:
“Ben Simmons Medical Update: Brooklyn Nets guard/forward Ben Simmons underwent a successful microscopic partial discectomy earlier today to alleviate the nerve impingement in his lower back. The procedure was performed by Dr. Timur Urakov, in consultation with Dr. Barth Green, at UHealth Jackson Memorial Medical Center. Simmons is expected to make a full recovery in time for training camp next season,” read the statement.
The biggest takeaway here is that the Nets expect Simmons to be ready in time for training camp. This means that he should be back to full strength by the time the new season begins. That’s going to be a crucial year for the 27-year-old as he enters the final year of his current contract.
In case you were wondering, Simmons is set to pocket a whopping $40.3 million in 2024-25. However, he could be headed to free agency after next season unless the Nets decide to give him an extension this summer.
It is worth noting that this will be the second time Simmons has had surgery on his back. In 2022, the 6-foot-10 guard underwent a microdiscectomy to address a herniated disc.
Simmons ends his 2023-24 campaign with averages of 6.1 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 5.7 assists in 23.9 minutes per game.
