The Duquesne Dukes’ lofty champion dreams may have ended at the hands of the No. 3 seed Illinois Fighting Illini in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, but there’s no denying that this was a campaign to remember.
It was a memorable send-off for now-former head coach Keith Dambrot who has decided to retire at the end of the season to care for his ailing wife. Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James has been an avid supporter of the Dukes and his former high school coach, and he has now taken the honor of announcing Dambrot’s successor.
Dru Joyce III Announced as Duquesne Dukes’ New Head Coach
LeBron took to Twitter on Thursday to announce that associate coach Dru Joyce III has been selected as the new head coach of the Dukes starting next season. Joyce is a good friend and was a former high school teammate of LeBron, which is why the Lakers superstar was extremely proud to make the announcement himself:
I’m proud to announce! As the unquestioned source I am confirming that Dru Joyce is the new HC at Duquesne University and is meeting with the team right now! So damn happy and proud of you my brother!!! @DruOnDemand @DuqMBB 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 #GoDukes❤️💙🤍

Joyce will obviously have some big shoes to fill at the helm as he succeeds Dambrot, who had a memorable seven-year career with Duquesne. Dambrot announced earlier this season that he had decided to call time on his tenure with the Dukes in order to take care of and spend more time with his wife, who had been diagnosed with breast cancer last year.
Joyce will inherit a very promising roster in Duquesne — one that will have some very high hopes for the 2024-25 season.
