The Georgia Bulldogs have been on a terrific run at the NIT tournament. While it doesn’t have the prestige of March Madness, it’s still a great achievement for any basketball team to make it far into the tournament.
Every player on the Georgia roster wants to make a deep run into the national title. The seniors especially want to end their collegiate career on a good note since the prospects of them making the NBA are slim at this point.
They managed to do just that after scraping past the Ohio State Buckeyes in a thrilling quarterfinal battle.
Georgia Bulldogs edge the Ohio State Buckeyes thanks to Noah Thomasson’s 21
The quarterfinal was incredibly close as neither team managed to separate themselves from their opponents. Both teams had similar offensive ratings, with Georgia’s 107.4 barely edging out Ohio State’s 104.4.
The player that made the difference for the Bulldogs was Noah Thomasson. The senior guard has been putting on a show for the team so far this season, and he delivered against the Buckeyes. His 21 points on 50% shooting and 80% from distance was what sealed the tight contest for the Bulldogs.
The rest of the team also pulled their weight against the Buckeyes. Blue Cain’s 17 points was an important complementary performance, and Frank Anselem’s 10 points and 10 rebounds was important in keeping their slim lead.
Bulldogs head coach Mike White didn’t hold back in praising his team. Per the Bulldogs’ official page:
“Unique team to say the least. Resilient team. We’ve said it all year. Consistent team. We’re really proud of these guys – I mean really proud of these guys. Really tough environment the other day, and an even tougher environment tonight. We’ve been on the road for a while… I thought it affected us offensively, especially in the second half. But our resiliency, our toughness, our willingness to want to continue to compete and keeping fighting to win another was on full display. I’m just really proud of this group. NIT Semifinals, to get to Indianapolis and be a part of this thing, I’m really proud of our guys.”
They will face another tough opponent in either Seton Hall or UNLV in the semi-finals, but they should put up a great fight regardless of whichever team they face.
