Golden State Warriors star Klay Thompson recently guested on teammate Draymond Green’s podcast, and it was a very interesting conversation between the two veterans. At one point, Thompson shed some light on his mindset entering this summer as he navigates free agency.
During his interview, Klay hinted at the possibility of leaving Golden State in the offseason.
Golden State Warriors News: Klay Thompson Gets Brutally Honest on Free Agency Plans
Thompson’s current deal expires at the conclusion of this season. This only means that if he so chooses, he could actually walk away from the Warriors this summer.
The five-time All-Star admitted to Green that this prospect placed a dark cloud over him early in the season. According to Klay, he needed to have at least four heart-to-heart conversations with coach Steve Kerr in order for him to accept the harsh reality he is currently living in:
“I just can’t believe it’s here,” Thompson said of the twilight of his career. “… I was actually struggling with that a lot at the beginning of this year because of the unknown. I might have let contract situations or playing time or making up a lot of excuses rather than just appreciating what is in front of me. … I got to have fun this year. I deserve to have fun. I can still be a heck of a player if I just give gratitude and keep that perspective.
“… Yes, I wanna re-sign with the Dubs, but I also have to prioritize my mental health and lay out what’s important to me at this point in my career.”

That last bit is very interesting. Thompson acknowledged that he would love to re-sign with Golden State this summer to potentially see out his career with the Warriors. At the same time, however, he has also expressed significant concerns about how his time with the Dubs has taken a toll on his mental health.
The pressure is extremely high in Golden State and perhaps a change in scenery is something Thompson is currently considering for the sake of his psychological wellbeing.
