Doris Burke has called plenty of big games in her illustrious career. From Los Angeles Lakers games to high-octane games that went to overtime, she’s lent her voice to describe the scenes that many basketball fans would remember for years to come.
However, Burke has never gotten the opportunity to lend her commentary to some of the biggest games of the season. After years of providing excellent analysis to thousands of NBA games, it was strange to see Burke not be given the torch for such a big game.

However, that changed when she was given the opportunity to serve as a game analyst for Game 1 of the 2024 NBA Finals between the Boston Celtics and the Dallas Mavericks. It was the first time that a woman was given the opportunity to call such a big game.
Players, fellow analysts, and fans immediately offered their congratulations to Burke. One of the players who reached out was one she shared a special moment with in 2016.
Los Angeles Lakers’ LeBron James congratulates Doris Burke for making history as first female NBA Finals analyst

James joined the rest of the NBA community in giving her flowers to Burke, a regular of ESPN’s “A” Team for NBA games alongside Mike Breen and JJ Redick.
His message was short but sincere:
“Important moment for our sport tonight,” James wrote. “Love and respect to DB and everything she does to elevate all of us! You’re a [GOAT]!”
Fans who watched the legendary Game 7 between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors in 2016 would remember Doris Burke interviewing James. She admitted that she was overwhelmed with emotions when she saw James cry on the hardwood after making an improbable comeback, and that moment is one they’ll share forever.

However, Burke tried to play down the significance of her moment, trying to focus on the game instead:
“Well, I’m trying to ignore the weight for now, if there is in fact any,” Burke said. “One of the things I’ve done my entire career is just think what is my next game and how do I best prepare for it. If I keep it in my context, it helps me just relax and enjoy what’s in front of me. Good Lord willing, I’m able to do that tonight.”
Fans who watched the Celtics dismantle the Mavericks from the three-point line enjoyed Doris Burke’s great observations about the game. This is a watershed moment for sports media, and fans can expect more of these moments in the years to come.
