Andy Katz is a respected name when it comes to anything and everything college basketball. Plenty of people listen to his opinions, and he is one of the names that get brought up whenever March Madness is upon us.
Now that the 2024 iteration of the tournament is officially underway, Katz was questioned on who he thinks would be able to make incredible Cinderella runs. He named four teams that he believes have the ability to make the tournament exciting.
Andy Katz selects Oregon, Wisconsin, New Mexico, and San Diego State as March Madness underdogs
Tzvi Machlin of The Spun reported that Katz believes Oregon, Wisconsin, New Mexico, and San Diego State have what it takes to make the tournament exciting by potentially making the Final Four.
The Oregon Ducks surprised everyone by winning the Pac-12 Tournament as the fourth seed, and this is thanks to the heroics of N’Falv Dante and Jermaine Cousinard. They have already advanced to the next round after taking down the South Carolina Gamecocks in the first round.
The New Mexico Lobos surprised everyone after emerging at the top of the Mountain West with a 26-9 record. Rick Patino has done a brilliant job at leading players like Jaelen House and Jamal Mashburn to incredible seasons.
The Wisconsin Badgers have a slightly worse record at 22-13, but they have an overpowering star in AJ Storr. While they’re slight favorites compared to JMU, they are not letting their strong finish in the Big Ten tournament make them overconfident.
Finally, the San Diego State Aztecs are not rated coming into the tournament because they performed poorly with a 24-10 record despite being runners-up last season. However, they still have an outstanding senior in Jaedon Ledee who can easily dump 20 points on UAB.
WIll any of these teams make the Final Four?
The magic of March Madness is that it’s hard to figure out which teams will make it to the Final Four. While there are plenty of strong teams in the tournament, the probability of powerhouses buckling the same way Kentucky did is high.
While it’s not logical to trust all of these teams will make the Final Four, it’s reasonable to trust they will put up decent performances.
