The Minnesota Timberwolves have reportedly fired an employee after discovering that he had stolen a significant amount of sensitive information from the organization.
Somak Sakar, a former coaching analyst, has been relieved of his role with the team and is now set to face trial after a criminal complaint was reportedly filed against him on Wednesday.
Minnesota Timberwolves Fire, Press Charges on Coach
ESPN’s Baxter Holmes broke the news on Wednesday as he revealed the details of Sakar’s crime:
“A Minnesota Timberwolves employee was fired, arrested and charged with felony third-degree burglary for allegedly stealing thousands of internal files, including ‘strategic NBA information,’ from a team executive, according to a criminal complaint filed Wednesday and obtained by ESPN,” wrote Holmes.
According to Holmes’ exposé, Sakar supposedly stole a hard drive from Wolves executive vice president Sachin Gupta. The said drive was reported missing on February 5 after Gupta, who also heads the team’s analytics department, returned from his weekend break.
Surveillance video placed Sakar at the scene of the crime, and the coach was immediately fired upon the discovery. The hard drive in question was eventually recovered from Sakar, who according to forensic analysis, was able to access and copy over 5,000 files from the drive.
Sakar reportedly admitted to having the device but claimed that he merely “put some stuff on it,” and forgot to return it to Gupta.
Holmes also reports that according to Sakar’s LinkedIn profile, the now-former Wolves employee has previously been employed in some form or fashion by the Houston Rockets, the New Orleans Pelicans, and the New York Knicks.
The Timberwolves have reportedly decided not to pursue criminal charges against Sakar.
