Oklahoma City Thunder fans are having the time of their lives. Their team is at the top of the Western Conference and is considered one of the heavy favorites to make a deep playoff run. They drafted multiple outstanding young players that have become the core of the team.
To make things even better for them, they have plenty of first-round draft picks that they wouldn’t know what to do with them. The team is built for success right now and in the future.
The crown jewel of this exciting Thunder roster is Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. The 25-year-old Canadian is shutting down plenty of NBA teams this season and he’s not even at the peak of his powers.
His play has been so good that one famous sports media personality is making rounds for his campaign to become the league MVP.
Skip Bayless believes Oklahoma City Thunder’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander should become MVP
Aside from Shai, Nikola Jokic is also doing wonders for the Denver Nuggets. Everyone knows that the Serbian center is the lynchpin to everything good with the Nuggets, making him alongside SGA the MVP frontrunners.
However, Skip Bayless believes Shai Gilgeous-Alexander should get the nod over the Joker. The popular basketball analyst holds the opinion that Shai has been doing fantastic work as the face of a marauding Thunder squad that stands atop the Wild Wild West.
Per Basketball Network’s Yakshpat Bhargava:
“SGA looked like an MVP night-after-night-after night,” Bayless said on Undisputed. “For them to go 57-25, it’s hard, man. And there is a Jamal Murray in and out of the lineup with Joker but he’s an All-Star. So you do have a wingman, who is a qualified star. In Oklahoma City, you don’t yet have that… you don’t have a bonafide No. 2 star to back him up when he has an off game. But he doesn’t have an off-scoring game. He’s going to get you 30 every night.”
Bayless isn’t the only one to give a resounding endorsement to the Canadian, and his stats show us why he deserves the nod. SGA averaged 30.1 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 6.2 assists through 75 regular-season contests. He’s also active on defense, notching 2.0 steals and 0.9 blocks a game.
While Shai is putting in work for the Thunder, the voters could have gone another way and selected another player in his stead. However, SGA has plenty of time to win the award. It’s more important for him and the Thunder to make a solid run and bring the Larry O’Brien trophy to OKC.
