Philadelphia 76ers rumors: It’s make or break for the Los Angeles Clippers this season. This year could be LA’s last to get some silverware in the Kawhi Leonard-Paul George era with the latter, in particular, potentially jumping ship at the end of the campaign.
Should he decide to test the waters of free agency, George will not have a shortage of suitors across the NBA. One of those teams is reportedly going to be the Sixers.
Philadelphia 76ers Keeping Tabs on Paul George
In a recent publication of his Substack, renowned NBA insider Marc Stein reported that the Sixers remain significantly interested in the possibility of recruiting George to Philly.
The nine-time All-Star is under contract with the Clippers through 2025, but the catch is that he has a player option for next season. This means that if he so chooses, he could walk away from LA this summer as an unrestricted free agent.
“League sources say that Philadelphia continues to loom as an eager George suitor should he make it onto the open market and give the 76ers their formal opportunity to try to lure him across the country,” Stein wrote. “The Sixers are said to maintain interest in George despite the widely held presumption that he and Leonard want to keep playing together in their native Southern California.”
George is now in his fifth season with the Clippers and so far, the farthest they’ve gone is the Western Conference Finals in 2021. The 33-year-old could be looking for a change in scenery soon as he aims to pursue his dream of winning an NBA championship, and he could very well achieve that lofty objective alongside Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey in Philadelphia.
Will Paul George Re-Sign With Clippers?
All hope is not lost for the Clippers, though. In fact, Stein reports that even if George decides not to pick up his player option for 2024-25, “the leaguewide expectation persists that Paul George and the LA Clippers will come to terms on a contract extension.”
It is worth noting, however, that LA is expected to deal with a significant luxury tax problem next season, which will have a significant impact on the type of deal they will be able to offer George. At this point, PG might want to look elsewhere if he’s aiming for a max contract because this does not appear to be a feasible option with the Clippers.
