It has been previously reported by Chris Haynes of ESPN that Phoenix Suns head coach Frank Vogel wanted the team to get a point guard, but that desire was shot down by the front office that’s led by former NBA player and now Suns general manager James Jones.
However, even Suns owner Mat Ishibia seemed as though he did not know about the differing stances of Vogel and Jones.
Via Alec Cipollini of Burn City Sports:
“Those decisions, James, Frank [Vogel], the players, everyone talks about these things,” Ishbia said. “Whether you need a point guard, whether you don’t need a point guard, there’s a lot of different discussions. There are two smart people and both people can go different ways. I don’t know if that report is correct by the way, whether Frank thought that or James thought that.
Do the Phoenix Suns Need a Point Guard?
During the 2023-24 NBA season, the Suns relied mostly on Devin Booker to fulfill the duties of a point guard. In fact, Booker spent an estimated 91 percent of his minutes this season playing the position. For comparison, that number was just zero a season before when the Suns still had Chris Paul, Cameron Payne, and Landry Shamet.
Booker isn’t a natural point guard, but he still managed to look capable as a distributor this season. He averaged 6.9 assists per game, a career-high, while still putting up 27.1 points per outing on 49.2 percent shooting from the field.
On the other hand, the Suns also have Bradley Beal and Kevin Durant, two stars who need the ball in their hands. With three stars who need to get fed with the ball consistently, it’s not hard to see why Jones would be hesitant about adding a point guard.
