After a pair of victories against the Oklahoma City Thunder and Indiana Pacers, Victor Wembanyama played like trash in a loss against the Houston Rockets. In turn, Gregg Popovich blasted the San Antonio Spurs for their poor performance.
In that particular game, Wembanyama only had 10 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, and seven blocks in 30 minutes on the court. The Spurs were led by Devin Vassell, who dropped 22 points, eight rebounds, and three assists.
For their part, the Rockets went wild on San Antonio and this can be seen in Alperen Sengun’s masterful 45-point, 16-rebound performance. Fred VanVleet added 21 points and 10 assists while Jalen Green dropped 23 points for Houston.
This loss dropped the San Antonio Spurs to a 13-49 record, the worst in the Western Conference. Meanwhile, The Houston Rockets are in 12th place with a 27-34 standing. Both teams are not projected to make the playoffs in the coming months.
Gregg Popovich Blasts Victor Wembanyama, San Antonio Spurs In Loss Against Houston Rockets
After the game, Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich had a message for Wembanyama and the team due to their poor performance against the Houston Rockets. In a pair of tweets by Tom Orsborn on X:
Pop: “That’s what you call a royal ass whuppin’, right there. They deserve a lot of credit. They were physical from the get-go ’till the end of the game…It put us in mud and we didn’t respond very well and you’ve got the outcome,” Orsborn posted.
More Pop from his 46-second presser: “Young group needs to understand the road is a lot different than at home & it requires a little bit more mental toughness and we didn’t have that tonight.” Pop was asked before leaving if Wemby was hurt, but he walked off without answering,” Orsborn added.
Popovich’s message is seen as a wake-up call for a young Spurs squad that carries a lot of potential, but lacks the experience to win just yet. Even with a talent like Wembanyama, a player on pace to win Rookie of the Year for the season, it seems the team needs more time to hone its craft to excel.
Even though the team lost, San Antonio has a bright future ahead, mostly because of how good Wembanyama has been. Without a doubt, the franchise will soon find its footing as the young rookie grows more in the coming years.
