The Dallas Mavericks‘ Grant Williams experiment did not exactly yield the desired results. After trading for the 6-foot-6 power forward this past summer, the Mavs decided to pull the plug on Williams after just half a season. They shipped him off the Charlotte Hornets prior to the trade deadline along with Seth Curry in exchange for P.J. Washington.
As it turns out, Dallas superstar Luka Doncic may have played a key role in the team’s decision to offload Williams — at least according to Milwaukee Bucks veteran turned NBA insider Patrick Beverley.
Did Luka Doncic Play Significant Role in Dallas Mavericks Decision to Trade Grant Williams?
In a recent episode of The Pat Bev Pod, Beverley revealed how Williams’ antics may have backfired on him during one of Dallas’ practices. Apparently, Williams decided to poke the bear by calling out Doncic for an alleged lack of focus and commitment during a scrimmage session. The Mavs superstar responded savagely:
“They kicked [Grant Williams] off the team because Luka killed him,” Beverley said. “They say they traded him because Luka was giving ’em buckets… [Williams] came in trying to be physical with Luka, Luka gave him 26 straight (points). He took off Luka’s shoes, put ’em back on the table. (Williams said) ‘I’m wearing my homie’s s**t Jayson Tatum.’”

The story goes that Williams called Doncic out during practice and decided to get physical with the Mavs star after Williams deemed that Luka wasn’t into that particular practice session. Doncic was having none of it, though, and he responded by killing Williams on the court.
It is unclear if Beverley was serious about Williams supposedly removing Doncic’s shoes in favor of wearing former Boston Celtics teammate Jayson Tatum’s Nike sneakers.
Either way, Williams’ time in Dallas is now officially over.
