The Gonzaga Bulldogs will start March Madness as huge underdogs when it comes to making a deep run in the tournament. While they have talented players, no clear star can take over when the chips are down.
However, one of the team’s notable alumni came forward in support of the team. The former forward, now an NBA star, believes his Bulldogs are a sleeper team that could easily destroy plenty of brackets when the tournament begins in earnest.
Domantas Sabonis believes the Gonzaga Bulldogs can run wild during March Madness
Sacramento Kings star Domantas Sabonis thinks his alma mater has what it takes to overturn pre-tournament odds and make a decent account of themselves in the tournament.
The Spun’s Chris Rosvoglou asked the big man about the Bulldogs’ chances, and he was bullish about his former team:
The Spun: Since March Madness is finally here, do you have a prediction for your Gonzaga Bulldogs?
DS: They haven’t been talked about as they were in previous years, but maybe that’s a good thing. You never know what happens in these tournaments. Maybe they’ll play better with less pressure on them.
Sabonins spent two years with the Bulldogs, breaking out in his sophomore season before declaring for the 2016 Draft. In his final year at Gonzaga, he averaged 17.6 points, 11.8 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 0.9 blocks on 61%/36%/77% shooting splits.
He’s since improved his game to become one of the most valuable modern big men in the NBA, but his statement makes it clear that he looks back at his time with the Bulldogs fondly.
Adam Morrison warns Gonzaga against McNeese State
While the Bulldogs are favorites against McNeese State, another of their former notable alumni warned the team not to get caught up in their opponents’ pace.
Gonzaga legend Adam Morrison warned the team ahead of their first-round match against McNeese State that the team should control the tempo.
Per Gonzaga Nation’s Cole Forsman, Morrison believes the key for the Bulldogs is to assert their style against the Cowboys’ high-tempo, post-heavy offense. If they manage to play their usual style of basketball, they should easily cruise past their opponents.
