Even without Karl-Anthony Towns, Anthony Edwards has been doing good during the final stretch of the regular season. And even with a shooting slump from deep, the Minnesota Timberwolves star just dropped a promise that should put every playoff team on notice.
That slump was on full display when the Houston Rockets visited Edwards and the Timberwolves at the Target Center. While Edwards posted 21 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals, Minnesota’s All-Star shooting guard didn’t connect any of his six three-point attempts from beyond the perimeter.
Fortunately, Naz Reid dropped 25 points and Rudy Gobert had a double-double of 12 points and 14 assists to help Minnesota get the 113-106 win over Houston. The Rockets, meanwhile, had Jalen Green went off with 26 points while Fred VanVleet contributed 22 points, five assists, and five steals for Houston.
The win helped Minnesota grab the Western Conference’s second seed, putting them in a tie with the Oklahoma City Thunder, a team led by MVP-favorite Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. The loss, on the other hand, has created some distance between Houston and the Golden State Warriors for the tenth seed or the final spot in the Play-In Tournament.
Minnesota Timberwolves Star Anthony Edwards Issues Bold Playoff Promise Despite Shooting Woes
Despite having a poor performance from beyond the arc, the Timberwolves star dropped a promise that should scare other teams in the playoffs. In a post shared by Jon Krawczynski on X:
Anthony Edwards was 0-6 from 3. He says he’s glad this slump is happening now. He knows what is not working. “In the playoffs, that shit’s gonna be BUTTER,” Krawczynski tweeted.
Over the course of 72 games this season, Edwards has averaged 26.0 points, 5.6 rebounds, 5.1 assists, and 1.3 steals per game. He’s also shooting 35 percent from the three-point line, which is in line with the league average during the modern era. If he improves both the volume and accuracy of his three-point shot, the Timberwolves’ offense will be taken to another level.
With only a handful of games left in the regular season, it’ll only be a matter of time before we see Edwards do good on his promise in the playoffs. And while he isn’t on the level of Stephen Curry, Damian Lillard, or Klay Thompson, the All-Star still has what it takes to be a three-point threat at some point in the future. If that happens, expect the Timberwolves to be a deadlier team than before and dominate the postseason in the process.
