Fresh off a memorable second-round takedown of the Denver Nuggets in the 2024 NBA Playoffs, the Minnesota Timberwolves were expected by many to at least play inspired in Game 1 of their Western Conference Finals against Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks. Instead, Anthony Edwards and the T’wolves lost at home last Wednesday, 108-105.
Minnesota’s performance was clearly not up to par and the Timberwolves got called for it by no less than Chris Finch during a recent team activity.

Just ahead of Game 2 at home, Finch said that he and the Timberwolves went through the Game 1 film, also revealing that he gave them a piece of his mind.
Via Jerry Zgoda of the Star Tribune:
It was a rough film session, Wolves coach Chris Finch said. “I told the guys, ‘It has been a long time since I’ve been this disappointed in your effort. Your performance, your attitude and attention to detail just wasn’t there.’ The Western Conference finals started. Not sure if they got the memo. But they got it this afternoon.”

In Game 1, the Timberwolves settled for a ton of shots from deep. They drained 18 of 49 3-point attempts, but the situation could have been more favorable for Minnesota if it tried to attack the basket and score points in the paint at a higher frequency. Defensively, the Mavericks pounced on the Timberwolves’ leaky resistance in the pain. Dallas ended up with 62 points in the paint, while Minnesota only had 38 such points.
It’s clear what Finch would like to see his team do more in Game 2. The only question is whether the Timberwolves could execute the plan this Sunday, as they look to even the series at 1-1 before flying to Dallas for Games 3 and 4.
