Sacramento Kings Center Domantas Sabonis Breaks 13-Year-Old Record in Massive Monday Night Win

Behind the historic performance of their star big man, Sabonis, the Sacramento Kings got a 108-96 win over the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday night.

The win on the night gave the Sacramento Kings their 10th winning season since moving to Sacramento 39 years ago. Kings standout center Domantas Sabonis recorded his 54th consecutive double-double, breaking the record for the longest streak since the 1976-77 NBA and ABA merger.

The record was previously held by Kevin Love during his 2010-2011 season with the Minnesota Timberwolves. With Sabonis now surpassing Kevin Love’s record, the last time a player had a double-double streak longer than Domantas was before any current NBA player was even born.

    And counting…!!! Congrats to the new Double-Double 👑 https://t.co/GdrhDyvSTO

Sabonis had been dominant on the board so far, currently leading the league with 13.7 rebounds per game, but he still has a long road to go to catch the all-time record of 227 straight double-doubles held by Wilt Chamberlain. Luckily for Sabonis, he doesn’t have to catch Wilt’s ultimately impossible feat as all the players before him to surpass over 53 straight double-doubles have all ended up in the hall of fame: Elvin Hayes, Walt Bellamy, Elgin Baylor, Jerry Lucas, and Bill Russell.

The big man controlled the game as Sacramento maintained a comfortable lead after going up 60-48 at halftime and bullied the 76ers throughout the second half. The only significant moment in the game came in the third quarter when Sabonis reached his milestone, as the Kings played a tribute video in Golden 1 Center after he accomplished the impressive feat.

Very cool scene in Sacramento, as Domantas Sabonis breaks Kevin Love’s 53-game double-double streak.

Domantas Sabonis has been having the best year of his career and dominating in all facets of the game. He also leads the league in triple-doubles after recording his 25th on the season with 11 points, 13 rebounds, and 10 assists. Sabonis became only the fifth player in NBA history with at least 25 triple-doubles in a season, joining some legendary centers and two guards, both once dubbed “Mr. Triple-Double.”

Damontas Sabonis adds his name to a list that only includes Nikola Jokic, Wilt Chamberlain, as well as Russell Westbrook and Oscar Robertson, who both accomplished this feat over three times in their career. Westbrook, of course, won an MVP for his first triple-double season, while Wilt also won MVP the year he accomplished this feat, and Jokic ended up as the runner-up in MVP voting but made up for it with a run to the championship.

DOMAS, THE DOUBLE-DOUBLE 👑@Dsabonis11 becomes the first player since 1976-77 with 54 straight double-doubles and the 5th player ever with 25 triple-doubles in a season!

    — NBA (@NBA) March 26, 2024

Sabonis has not missed a single game this season and incredibly is currently on pace to be the only player other than Wilt to average over 20 points per game along with over 13 rebounds and eight assists each night. Even with the historic production, Sabonis has had difficulty getting any love outside of the Sacramento area. All can agree now it was absolutely absurd that a player doing things only ever done by Wilt Chamberlain wasn’t even selected to the All-Star team this year, making it easily the biggest snub in NBA history.

Sacramento will now face the Dallas Mavericks in a pivotal two-game stretch. The Kings are 2-0 against the Mavericks so far this season, with both their wins coming in Dallas. The Tuesday night and Friday matchups will have major postseason implications, as Sacramento is currently tied with the Mavericks for the seventh spot in the highly competitive Western Conference.
