San Antonio Spurs super rookie Victor Wembanyama is already one of the best defensive players in the league. He can defend multiple positions and is a terrifying presence at the rim. But during one play in Monday night’s home game against the visiting Golden State Warriors, Wembanyama got served with a nasty facial from fellow rookie and Dubs big man Trayce Jackson-Davis.
San Antonio Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama Sounds Off On Poster Dunk
Wembanyama isn’t one to get demoralized by getting dunked on. He knows it’s an occupational hazard for rim protectors like him. He knows he can’t always block or deter every shot that he challenges. For Wembanyama, getting posterized is just part opf the business.
“Getting dunked on is nothing. It’s part of the game. I dunk on a lot of people and a lot of people dunk on me too. But I think I block more often than I get dunked on, so that’s positive,” the San Antonio Spurs youngster said in French after the game (h/t Tom Orsborn of the San Antonio Express-News).
That dunk from Jackson-Davis doesn’t change the fact that Wembanyama is a scary presence on defense for San Antonio opponents. The 7-4 Wembanyama is leading the entire league with 3.4 blocks per game and is also recording 1.3 steals per contest. Against the Warriors, Wembanyama had 27 points, 14 rebounds, three assists, a steal, and two blocks, albeit in a 112-102 loss.
Wembanyama is not going to get discouraged by one block attempt that did not go his way. Expect him to continue bothering rim attackers and having so much success on defense.
The Spurs, who are just 14-51, will next take on the Houston Rockets on Tuesday at home.
