San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama is unlike any other rookie we’ve ever seen play in the NBA. Based on what we’ve seen from him in his debut season, this kid truly is one-of-one.
Wemby is also unlike most young athletes in the game today in that he opts to veer away from the pitfalls of social media. The 20-year-old recently shared his brutally honest thoughts about this polarizing issue, and some fans might not like what the Frenchman has to say about it.
San Antonio Spurs Star Victor Wembanyama Gets Real on Social Media
Wembanyama has quickly established himself as one of the most popular stars in the NBA today, The fact that he already has 3.7 million followers on Instagram is a clear testament to this notion.
For his part, however, the Spurs big man revealed that he makes an extra effort not to involve himself with the goings-on in social media:
“I turn my phone off,” said Wembanyama, per Tom Osborn of the San Antonio News Express.
“… Most of the time those apps aren’t even on my phone. I delete them for days, weeks, or months sometimes. And whenever I want to look something up, I download them again.”
Wemby went on to say that social media — particularly all the negativity that it breeds — is “not something I ever had to worry about.”
“I try to keep things in perspective,” he said. “People are fans of the game and are sharing their opinions. And social media is an easy way for people to voice their opinions without meeting you face to face and saying those things. A lot of people get caught up in that. For me, it’s just about staying focused on what you know is most important in life.”
Gregg Popovich Chimes In
This is music to the ears of Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich, who himself admitted that he too has taken measures to try and encourage his players to regulate their use of social media:
“I don’t follow them around day and all night, see how many minutes they’re spending on their phones,” he said. “But we’ve brought in people to talk to them about that so they understand there are ways they can spend their time a whole lot more efficiently and meaningfully. Hopefully, they are paying attention.”
Coach Pop is old school and you would expect this exact mindset from the 75-year-old shot-caller. What’s a bit surprising, though, is that Wembanyama appears to be in the same boat.
