Jrue Holiday just secured a huge bag after agreeing to a monster four-year, $135 million extension deal with the Boston Celtics that was reported Wednesday night. That means that Holiday could likely be finishing his NBA career with the Celtics. His four-year extension with the club will have him under contract until he’s 38.
It is also worth noting that Holiday has declined his player option worth $37.3 million in 2024-25 season, meaning the Celtics will knock off a few million dollars from their cap hit next season.
Jrue Holiday’s Extension With Boston Celtics, a Rarity in the NBA
Not many players in the history of the league have managed to secure an extension deal worth over $100 million past 33 years old, which means Holiday is now part of a small club of stars who managed to pull off such a transactional feal.
Via Shane Young of Forbes Sports:
With the new deal being an average annual value of $33.8 million, this move actually saves the franchise a few million on next year’s payroll when accounting for the salary difference and luxury tax penalties that would result from a higher annual figure (if he opted in).
Holiday joins LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and Al Horford as the only players to ink a fully guaranteed contract north of $100 million at age 33 or older.
The Celtics are a favorite to win the title this season, considering how stacked they are and the fact that they are finishing the regular season with the best record in the entire league. With Holiday, Boston has one of the best perimeter defenders in NBA history and someone with experience in winning an NBA championship. He was part of the Milwaukee Bucks squad that won the Larry O’Brien Trophy in 2021.
In his first season with the Celtics, the UCLA Bruins product Holiday is averaging 12.5 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 4.9 assists per game. He is not carrying as much scoring load as he used to during his days in Bucks threads, but he’s still an important cog of the Celtics, who have long secured the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference.
Holiday arrived in Beantown after two blockbuster trades in the 2023 offseason. He was first sent to the Portland Trail Blazers by the Bucks in a deal that also involved the Phoenix Suns. After spending a few days with Portland, the Trail Blazers traded the veteran point guard to the Celtics in exchange for big man Robert Williams III and guard Malcolm Brogdon along with a couple of future picks (2024 first-rounder, 2029 first-rounder).
