D’Angelo Russell played an integral role yet again for the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday night as they secured a 116-104 victory against one of his former teams, the Brooklyn Nets.
It was LeBron and his 40-point explosion that stole the show on Sunday, but there’s no denying that Russell was a key cog yet again as the Lakers won for a sixth time in their last seven games.
RUMOR: Los Angeles Lakers Should Be Wary of Magic Threat for D’Angelo Russell
The fact Russell has been quite a revelation this season has placed the Lakers into quite a dilemma. The former All-Star has a player option for the 2024-25 season, which means that unless he pens an extension in the offseason, he could walk away from LA as an unrestricted free agent.
Team insider Jovan Buha of The Athletic has added a potential wrinkle to Russell’s situation in Hollywood. According to Buha, the Orlando Magic should be a team to watch in terms of potentially luring DLo away from LA:
“Orlando’s the team,” Buha said (h/t Jesse Cinquini of Lakers Daily). “Orlando is the team that — talking to people with the Lakers, talking to people outside the Lakers — Orlando is the team that probably gives them the most concern in terms of a potential suitor.”
The Magic are one of the teams that are expected to have a lot of cap room available for next season, and they could opt to use a huge chunk of the same to add a tested point guard to their young and very promising core. For his part, Russell could be eager to get out of the shadow of LeBron James and Anthony Davis in favor of a fresh start in sunny Florida.
