The New York Knicks have one of the best defenses in the NBA in the 2023-24 NBA season. That’s been nicely exemplified by the team over their last few games. In fact, the Knicks have allowed just an average of 77.3 points over their three most recent outings, including Tuesday night’s 106-79 decimation of the Philadelphia 76ers.
The Knicks have prevented each of their last three opponents from scoring more than 80 points. That’s quite a defensive feat, especially in the free-flowing, offensive-friendly landscape of today’s NBA. But somehow the Knicks did it. It’s also the first time they managed to pull off such a feat since the 2000-01 season when Jalen Brunson’s dad, Rick Brunson, was still playing for the Knickerbockers, per the Knicks PR team’s official X account.
The Knicks held the 76ers to 79 points tonight, marking the first time the Knicks have held their opponent under 80 points in three consecutive games since the 2000-01 season.
Tom Thibodeau Shares Secret Behind The New York Knicks’ Repeating Incredible Feat
After the win over the 76ers, Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau was asked about his thoughts on his team’s recent success on defense
I asked Tom Thibodeau about what it takes to lead the Knicks to three straight performances holding their opponent to <80 points, which the team last accomplished in 2000.
“Obviously, a Brunson…”

Even better, Thibodeau was also part of the New York Knicks’ coaching staff in the 2000-01 campaign when the team still had Jeff Van Gundy as head coach.
