Even though they were not able to progress past the second round of the 2024 NBA Playoffs, the Oklahoma City Thunder must be feeling confident about their chances of being a perennial title contender in the league.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Could Soon Ink a Monster Extension With the Oklahoma City Thunder
A big reason for that is the fact that they have Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in the fold. Alexander has three more seasons remaining on his current deal and he has a greenlight according to NBA rules to sign in 2025 what would be a massive super max extension contract, as noted by Bobby Marks of ESPN.
“Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is now eligible to sign a super max extension in the 2025 offseason. He would be the first player to earn $80M+ in one season.”
The big takeaway from that is the potential $80 million-plus earnings in just one season should he land that extension.
Here’s what a breakdown of such an extension looks like for the Oklahoma City star, per Marks:
2027-28: $65,684,850
2028-29: $70,939,638
2029-30: $76,194,426
2030-31: $81,449,214
It is hard to deny that Gilgeous-Alexander deserved whatever money the Thunder would want to throw at him after the way he played in the last two seasons. After finishing fifth in the MVP voting in the 2022-23 NBA season, Gilgeous-Alexander became runner-up to Nikola Jokic for the same award in the 2023-24 campaign. In his last two seasons with the Thunder, the former Kentucky Wildcats star has averaged 30.7 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 5.8 assists to go with a 52.3 field goal percentage across 143 games played.
