The 2024 NBA Trade Deadline is coming up on February 8th. The Milwaukee Bucks are looking for any deal that can help finish out their roster before the playoffs. As of now, the Bucks have a solid starting five-man rotation. They need to add more depth in order to compete with teams like the Celtics and Nuggets if they want a shot at a second title. One interesting name has come up, according to Marc Stein.
The Bucks and Grant Williams
Marc Stein reports that the Bucks and Mavericks have had discussions about a potential swap of Grant Williams for Bobby Portis. Williams, who agreed to a sign and trade this offseason, is under contract until the end of the 2027 season. Fan favorite Bobby Portis is under contract until the end of the 2026 season. The basic stats suggest that Williams would be a downgrade from Portis. Williams has averaged fewer points, rebounds, and has a lower shooting percentage this season compared to Portis. Williams has proven himself to be an excellent defender in the NBA, and also is familiar with the Celtics players. Would this trade truly help the Bucks and be beneficial?
Should the Bucks Make This Trade?
This answer is very dependent on what the Bucks are going to prioritize going into the playoffs. The starting five has shown an ability to score with the best, but also is prone to giving up points. Having defensive minded players coming off the bench come playoff time is a necessity.
New head coach Doc Rivers should be planning on staggering his starting lineup, having either Giannis or Lillard out there at every moment of the game. Of course when Giannis is out there, the defense will be better than when Lillard is out there. Williams can also defend bigger players when Giannis is out. Even though he’s a fan favorite, having Grant Williams for two extra years and the better defender come playoff time is what the Bucks should make a priority.
The Bucks Odds to Win the Championship

As of February 6, 2024, the Bucks are tied with the Clippers for the third best odds to win the NBA Championship at +550 according to DraftKings. This means for every $100 you bet, you’ll win $550. Even though the Celtics are thought of as the best team in the NBA, it’s worth betting on the Bucks for value. If they make this trade, their defense will improve, giving them another leg up on Boston. Once the Conference Finals and NBA Finals come along, anything can happen.
