Depending on how you view the UConn Huskies, you either enjoyed or hated every single minute the team celebrated their fifth championship after taking down Zach Edey and the Purdue Boilermakers in the national championship.
There are different reasons why the Huskies managed to triumph over Purdue. Some may point to the outstanding execution of the players while others will credit Dan Hurley for his outstanding strategy to deny Edey some much-needed help.
While conversations about the X’s and O’s will persist for a good while, it’s also clear that the final was one of the most-watched amateur basketball games in the country.
As the curtains draw on the 2023-24 NCAA men’s basketball season, the organization released the numbers on how many fans took the time off their schedules to watch the two best teams in college basketball duke it out.
NCAA reports more than 70,000 college basketball fans saw the UConn Huskies win in person
The Spun’s Andrew Gould reported that fans flocked to State Farm Stadium to see the Huskies dominate the Boilermakers in what turned out to be a one-sided onslaught.
He also wrote about the number of people who came to watch the two Final Four matches. He also noted the likely reason behind the large number of attendees to the season finale:
On Monday night, the NCAA announced an official attendance of 74,423 people. It’s the third-largest turnout for a men’s title game.
Arizona’s Final Four games combined for an attendance of 149,143, the fifth-highest number in tournament history.
A full house is watching a colossal showdown between two No. 1 seeds. The Huskies are attempting to become the first back-to-back champions since the 2006 and 2007 Gators, while the Boilermakers are pursuing their first national title in program history.
The UConn Huskies easily cruised past their opponents throughout the tournament, and the Purdue Boilermakers didn’t turn out to be any different. The program Dan Hurley has built is so strong that there have been fans and analysts claiming that they could probably compete against NBA teams.
While that is unlikely, it only proves just how big of an impact UConn has been making on the men’s basketball scene.
