Dallas Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic just came out with an MVP-like performance on Sunday night against the Houston Rockets. The 25-year-old torched the Rockets for 47 points as he poured some ice-cold water on Houston’s scorching-hot 11-game winning streak.
At this point, it comes as absolutely no surprise that Doncic has firmly established himself as one of the frontrunners for this season’s Most Valuable Player title.
Dallas Mavericks Star Luka Doncic Speaks Out on MVP Race
For his part, however, Doncic isn’t letting all the MVP talk distract him from the big picture. When asked to share his view on his own MVP credentials, the five-time All-Star opted to take a pass:
“I can’t answer that (MVP question),” he told Sam Amick of The Athletic on Friday. “That’s for the media. I’m happy we’re winning, man. That’s it. You know I’m not going to answer that question.”
There’s no denying that the prospect of winning his first-ever MVP title is something that’s lingering in the mind of the Mavs superstar. At the same time, however, he has made it abundantly clear that what matters more is that Dallas has placed itself in a position wherein it can confidently compete for a title this season.
At the moment, the Mavs are fifth in the West with a 45-29 record. However, only two games separate them from the eight-seed Phoenix Suns, which means that Doncic and Co. are not out of the woods just yet in terms of avoiding the Play-In tournament.
At this point, Luka will need to keep his focus fixed on the task at hand.
