While the duo of Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic didn’t look like it was going to work at first, the two have proven doubters wrong by leading the Dallas Mavericks in the playoffs. As a result, Atlanta Hawks star Trae Young gave the two the flowers they deserve on social media.
Irving first arrived in Dallas from the Brooklyn Nets before the trade deadline passed. At that point, fans and critics have already soured on the one-time NBA champion due to his controversial beliefs and consistent bouts with various injuries. During that 20-game stretch, he averaged 27.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 6.0 assists, and 1.3 steals per game.
In this season, it seemed like Irving’s pairing with Doncic finally clicked. Even before the playoffs, the duo helped push the Mavericks to get the Western Conference’s fifth seed from out of nowhere. Add the trade deadline acquisitions of Daniel Gafford and P.J. Washington to the mix, and suddenly, Dallas became a contender.
Now, the Mavs are up 3-0 against Anthony Edwards and the Minnesota Timberwolves. Both Irving and Doncic posted 33 points each to lead Dallas within one game of reaching the NBA Finals this year.
Trae Young Praises Dallas Mavericks’ Duo of Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic
Even before Game 3, various personalities have praised the pairing of All-Star guard Luka Doncic and former champion Kyrie Irving. Among those is Atlanta Hawks star Trae Young in a post he shared on X:
“Kyrie may be the PERFECT compliment to Luka ! They toughhh,” Young tweeted.
Although the fit was questionable at first, the two All-Stars have learned how to work well on the court together without diminishing the other’s impact. This can be seen in how Dallas has defeated the Los Angeles Clippers, Oklahoma City Thunder, and taken a commanding lead against Minnesota.
With the Mavs nearing their return to the NBA Finals, the team will count on the duo of Irving and Doncic more. So far, though, it looks like they’re doing so good as Dallas is going deep in the postseason.
