San Antonio Spurs news: As far as determining the future face of an organization’s franchise, there are few, if any, more sure-fire candidates than Victor Wembanyama for the Spurs. The rookie has lived up to the insane hype that surrounded him before he entered the NBA, thereby giving San Antonio a superstar to build around for the years to come.
As it turns out, the Spurs may already start making big moves as early as this summer.
San Antonio Spurs Already Planning to Build Roster Around Victor Wembanyama
It comes as no surprise that the Spurs are already planning ahead with Wembanyama at the center of their blueprint. After all, San Antonio’s 15-56 record goes to show that the 20-year-old will need a lot of help by his side if the Spurs are serious about contending for a championship in the not-so-distant future.
According to Grant Afseth of the NBA Analysis Network, San Antonio is already looking for a guard in the trade market to pair with Wemby in 2024-25:
“As the San Antonio Spurs continue to see historic results from Victor Wembanyama and remain excited to do so on a nightly basis as the 2023-24 season plays out, the focus will naturally shift to adding more talent around him when the offseason arrives.
“Sources tell NBA Analysis Network that the Spurs have done due diligence on backcourt options as they monitor the trade market for guards to pair with Wembanyama. San Antonio’s results with Tre Jones and Wembanyama serve as significant optimism for how the team could execute after a backcourt upgrade,” wrote Afseth.
Tre Jones is no scrub, but it appears that the Spurs are looking to make a significant upgrade in their backcourt alongside Wemby. This young man is likely going to be a dominant force in the NBA for years to come and he will need a star-caliber point guard to feed him night in and night out.
Victor Wembanyama Speaks Out
For his part, Wembanyama revealed that he’s more than happy with the developments around him. The frontrunner for Rookie of the Year likes the players he has been surrounded with, which is always the first step toward a cohesive unit:
“It’s a lot of communication with the coaches and the front office, of course, to know where we are comfortable with each other in the game and where we’re not comfortable, to know what kind of pieces we would need to add,” Wembanyama said.
“So it is a lot of discussion because, at the end of the day, the GM and the front office know their job, and they can do almost anything with what we got today. But it’s a matter of how well they understand us, the players and the coaches, about where we want to go and how we want to develop.”
Wemby has to know, however, that it’s very much possible that the Spurs come out with an entirely different lineup next season as they look to surround him with more star power in his sophomore year.
