John Calipari has been rumored to be finalizing a deal to be the next head coach of the Arkansas Razorbacks. However, he might have some problems with his move because of his Kentucky Wildcats contract.
Amid the buzz that Calipari is on the move, particular details of his Wildcats deal has emerged, suggesting that he might have violated his contract with Kentucky.
John Calipari’s Kentucky Wildcats Contract
The issue was raised by Jack Pilgrim of KSR, noting how Kentucky was never informed that Calipari was in discussions with Arkansas for a potential coaching deal. As many fans would know, the Calipari news came out of nowhere, and it developed swiftly–from reports of their talks quickly shifting to the two sides apparently working on a five-year deal just mere hours later.
“A very important detail to keep in mind as we quickly approach the 24-hour mark since John Calipari’s reported five-year agreement with Arkansas and no official word. Kentucky was never informed he was deep in discussions with another school, thus a violation of his contract,” Pilgrim explained.
The KSR reporter also provided a screenshot of the exact terms of Calipari’s contract when it comes to employment opportunities, which says:
“During the term of this Agreement, Coach shall notify the Director of Athletics of any offers of employment, employment opportunities or requests for meetings or discussions with respect to possible employment opportunities before engaging in substantive discussions regarding such employment or employment opportunities.”
Clearly, considering how fast things developed between Calipari and Arkansas, it’s unlikely Kentucky has been notified beforehand. Not to mention that with no final deal reported between the veteran coach and the Razorbacks, it might suggest that there are issues with Calipari’s exit with the Wildcats.
Sure enough, it will be interesting to see how it goes for Calipari with his Arkansas move. If he’s found to violate the terms of his contract with Kentucky, there could be financial repercussions for him.
For now, though, Wildcats and Razorbacks fans can only wait and see.
John Calipari’s Kentucky Wildcats Tenure
John Calipari’s controversial pending move to the Arkansas Razorbacks highlights his desire to leave the Kentucky Wildcats job–so much so that he didn’t even realize he’s violating his contract.
But what has happened to Calipari that he wanted to leave Kentucky so bad?
Well, for starters, the Wildcats’ recent stretch of failing to make it even to the Final Four could be a major reason. This 2023-24, they were taken out in the first round by the Oakland Golden Grizzlies. In 2022-23, they were out at the Round of 32.
In 2021-22, they were also beaten in the opening round when Saint Peters pulled off a historic upset against them.
While Calipari and Kentucky were seemingly ready to run it back for another attempt to win the title, it now appears the veteran head coach wants a fresh start.
Calipari has been the Wildcats’ head coach for the last 15 years, during which he tallied a 410-123 win-loss record and guided the team to four Final Four appearances (2011, 2012, 2014 and 2015) and one title in 2012. The 65-year-old coach has been a great recruiter for Kentucky, as proven by the top-rated talents from the team that went on to become NBA players, such as Devin Booker, Anthony Davis and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander among many others.
If Calipari ends up really moving to Arkansas, the Razorbacks will get a well-experienced coach who’ll bring culture and tons of star power to the program. As for Kentucky, they will have to take on the difficult task of finding Calipari’s replacement.
