When the Dallas Mavericks traded with the Brooklyn Nets for Kyrie Irving, many wondered whether the mercurial guard would be able to synergize with Luka Doncic.
It was easy to see why many had doubts over the trade: both Doncic and Irving were ball-dominant guards who work best when the rock is in their hands. Moreover, it was hard to gauge how Doncic would be able to gel with a player who’s not afraid to have his name involved in controversy.
However, all of these doubts immediately went away after the two seamlessly played off each other. While the Mavs are still a couple of pieces away from becoming heavy favorites, the fact that their keystone duo is playing well is a pleasant surprise to everyone.
One NBA exec thinks the Dallas Mavericks have the most dangerous duo in Doncic and Irving
Ashish Mathur of Hoops Wire talked with one NBA exec to discuss how effective Luka and Kyrie have been as a backcourt duo. He claimed that the on-court chemistry the two have displayed will make them a nightmare matchup for any team in the NBA:
“Luka and Kyrie are the best duo in the NBA,” the exec told Hoops Wire. “Their chemistry on the court is off the charts. They complement each other so well and they genuinely like each other.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if Dallas makes a serious run in the playoffs. I don’t see a defense stopping Luka and Kyrie in a seven-game series.”
The duo combine for 59.7 points per game, and that’s not even considering the unique skill sets they bring to the table. Kyrie can dribble like nobody’s business and can easily weave past opponents to force mismatches. Meanwhile, Luka makes the most of his size, change of pace, and elite passing to find the open man in the most unexpected places.
Even better is that they’re not averse to sharing the ball, creating multiple iconic moments for Mavs fans throughout the season.
It may become tough for the Mavericks to just rely on the duo come playoff time, but they have a shot at winning as long as both Luka and Kyrie are firing at all cylinders.
