When it comes to point guards, Rajon Rondo is certainly one of the greatest to do it, especially after winning championships with the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics. Turns out, he’s being eyed by the former’s front office for a coaching role.
After spending two years playing for Kentucky, Rondo entered the NBA as the Phoenix Suns’ 21st overall pick in the 2006 Draft, then traded later on to the Celtics. A year later, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen joined the team and created a core with Boston icon Paul Pierce. That run resulted in a championship during the 2007-08 season with Rondo averaging 10.2 points, 4.1 rebounds, 6.6 assists, and 1.7 steals per contest.
From that point on, Rondo played several seasons more in Boston before the front office traded him to the Dallas Mavericks. He would bounce around the league playing for teams like the Sacramento Kings, Chicago Bulls, New Orleans Pelicans, Atlanta Hawks, Los Angeles Clippers, and Cleveland Cavaliers.
Rondo’s last meaningful run was with the Lakers from 2018 to 2020 with the final year there resulting in a championship with LeBron James and company. During that postseason, the four-time All-Star point guard averaged 8.9 points, 4.3 rebounds, 6.6 assists, and 1.4 steals per game.
Los Angeles Lakers Eyeing Former Boston Celtics Star Rajon Rondo for Coaching Role
Even with his playing days behind him, Rondo remains one of the most intelligent floor generals to ever play the game. However, he might be seeing action next season as part of the Lakers’ coaching staff in a tweet Lakers Vino shared on X.

At this point in time, it’s not yet known who will be the Lakers’ new head coach after Darvin Ham was let go recently. Among the names that are being considered are NBA analyst JJ Redick and Boston Celtics assistant coach Sam Cassell.
If Rondo does end up being part of L.A. coaching staff, his experience and immense intellect will serve the Lakers well. And if LeBron James stays with the franchise, he’ll have the former Celtics point guard helping him compete next season.
